IMMUNE FOR LIFE: EXCERCISING YOUR “DOCTOR WITHIN”

I was sitting in my office with a pleasant 42-year-old-banker. His medical and personal history had been taken, his physical examination was completed and his test results had been returned to me. His outlook was good, but his health was only fair. After discussing Super Foods and other recommendations, I suggested that he embark on a program of regular exercise. His reply went something like this:

“I’d like to, Dr. Fox, but I haven’t got the time. Besides, I get enough exercise at work. I’m already in good shape, and I’m basically healthy, so I don’t need to exercise. Plus, I eat well. That’s not to say I wouldn’t, but I really don’t have the energy for exercise after a full day at work. And exercise would make me hungry; I’d eat more and get fat. You know, this exercise thing is just another fad like hoola hoops. Who runs a 10K anymore? What it comes down to is that exercise is boring. Besides, I’d be too embarrassed to work out at a club. Everybody there is in such good shape. I’d look like an overweight, out-of-shape old man.”

This guy wins the best-excuse-for-not-exercising prize. But he loses the bigger prize: a chance to make his “doctor within” stronger and healthier.
